They are called woodwinds because in the renaissance period when these instruments were manufactured people made them from wood. This kind of manufacturing is left in the past but some people still use timber in the construction of these instruments. There are two sorts of woodwinds after the method of blowing: labial & lingual. There is a lateral hole in the head of the labial musical instrument where the air is blown. The air stream is cleaved on the sharp border of the hole. This is the reason of air resonance within the pipe where the sound forms. Flute concerns to this type of instruments. There is a reed in the structure of lingual woodwinds. The air stream goes through it. Clarinet and saxophone concern to this kind and some types of rare instruments. The reed is attached to the top of the instrument and it becomes the stimulator of the air stream resonance inside the pipe. There are two kinds of reeds too: single and double. A single reed looks like a little cane blade and its duty is to shut aperture in the mouthpiece of the musical instrument and to leave there a narrow slit. Air flow makes the reed to vibrate with a high frequency and concurrently with this procedure it opens and shuts the tunnel within the mouthpiece of the instrument. A double reed consists of 2 canes compactly joined to each other. Resonance is created by the current of air that shuts and opens the gap between the canes.
