Some Words about GPS Systems of Today

NAVSTAR GPS is a really popular navigation system that is used by a great amount of people nowadays. This system is created for detecting the location and speed of the objects at any area on Earth. It can be done almost in all weather conditions and in all the areas on Earth including polar territory and in space to 100 kilometers above Earth. The developer of Global Positioning System became the United States Department of Defense that has realized the project.

The main principle of work is identifying of the position by the method of measuring the distance to an object from the point with definite coordinates. The distance is detected by the counting the delay time of the signal spreading from the satellite-transmitter to a GPS antenna which is a receiver. You may find that GPS receiver must know the distance to 3 satellites and the time of the GPS system to identify 3-dimensional coordinates. As a result, radio signals from 4 satellites minimum are used for the detecting of GPS receiver's coordinates and altitude. Orbital force tracking is implemented from the main control station that is located in Schriever base, Colorado.

Nowadays GPS receivers are often used for civil purposes, mostly for position and speed detection. GPS devices are being sold in diverse shops and they are built in mobile phones, PCs and onboarders. A user may detect his geographical position with the assistance of GPS receiver at any moment of time that he needs. The exactness of the definition of the signal location is from three to five meters and it is really improved with the correction signal from Earth and the calculating mistake is 1 millimeter.
